Research

Chirp is a semi-private, anonymity-centered, sandbox platform built to investigate the effects of online communication and self-disclosure of mood or emotional state on users. Chirp is available on both the Apple and Google app stores. The code is also open source on Github.

We ran a 90-person user study in 2022 investigating how emotional self-disclosure over Chirp impacts feelings of social support. Qualitative results show a promising relationship between even the limited communication on Chirp and ability to connect and give/receive social support. A paper on this study is to appear in CSCW 2024.

Team

Chirp was created in 2020 and is maintained by a group of graduate and undergraduate researchers from Brown University's Human Computer Interaction Lab.
